Shockwave Therapies Make Back Pain Easier to Treat

Advances in medical technology have truly revolutionized the way certain diseases and conditions are cured. Take for instance back pains; normally treated with the help spinal manipulation and back surgery, they can now be fixed using supersonic acoustic waves via shockwave therapy.

The therapy is administered using shockwave machines which come in various types, although they all generally operate in the same way. An apparatus is placed directly on top of the area of skin that needs treatment, which will then emit a burst of energy which penetrates through skin, bone, and muscle. The depth of penetration can be as much as 2.75 inches, depending on the quality of the machine and the orientation of the apparatus.

Shockwave therapy works on the idea that the acoustic waves produced by the energy burst result in ‘micro-trauma’ or miniscule forms of damage materializing in the affected tissue, which the body is then forced to repair. As the body heals itself, it also attempts to fix the inflammation or irritation that causes the pain in the first place.

This form of treatment is thus noted for its pain relieving, as well as therapeutic, effects. In addition to these, shockwave therapy is also known to improve metabolism and stimulate osteoblast (cell-repair) activity, which help in overall healing for the long-term.
